Which transactions do not earn cashback?

Whether a purchase earns cashback depends on the category assigned to the merchant by its payment provider.

Payment providers use a standard merchant category code, or MCC, to identify the type of business where you made the transaction, such as a supermarket, gas station, or money transfer service.

Transactions that do not earn cashback include:

  • Financial services, money transfers, and e-wallet top-ups
  • Gambling, lottery, and betting transactions
  • Cash withdrawals and other transactions treated like cash
  • Fees, interest, penalties, and account adjustments
  • Refunded purchases

For full details, check the list of non-eligible MCCs.

A merchant may be assigned a category that is different from its main type of business. The category provided by its payment provider determines whether the transaction earns cashback.
